Death toll after Lombok quake rises to 259

Dozens killed in Indonesia earthquake

The powerful 6.9-magnitude natural disaster that struck the island of Lombok has left more than 130 people dead and displaced thousands.

It is the third big quake to hit Lombok in little over a week.

Buildings still standing on the island have been weakened after Sunday's 6.9 quake that killed at least 131 people and a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 16.

"It is already clear that Sunday's quake was exceptionally destructive", Christopher Rassi, the head of a Red Cross assessment team on Lombok, said in a statement.

A humanitarian crisis looms in Lombok, which was rocked by another deadly quake last month that killed 17 people, with thousands of victims of Sunday's disaster in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter, aid agencies say. It also reported a 5.4-magnitude quake at 2.21am on Tuesday, close to the site of Sunday's 6.9-magnitude quake.

According to witnesses on the ground, the latest tremor has caused further buildings to collapse.

Reporting from Lombok, 7 News Melbourne's Joey Catanzaro said carparks have been turned in emergency rooms as hospitals continue to be flooded with injured people.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross said Tuesday all of the 2,000 tourists on the Gili Islands had now been evacuated. Many Indonesian speakers wrote messages on Facebook using the word "selamat" - which can mean "safe" but also "congratulations" - triggering celebratory animations.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

Kurniawan Eko Wibowo, a doctor at the field hospital, said most patients had broken bones and head injuries.

Some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters.

"We still have supplies for the next few days, but I'm not sure about after that", Billa Rabbani, a spokeswoman from the Peduli Anak orphanage, told AFP.

Still, government assistance was barely a trickle in the west Lombok village of Kekait where Zulas Triani, an elementary school teacher who was sharing a tent with 30 others, said they had received only a basket with three noodle packets, five eggs and a small ration of water.
