DNI Dan Coats Calls Out Trump's Russia Comments At Aspen Security Forum

The magazine illustrated the cover story, entitled "Summit Crisis", with a morphed image of President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

'I think we will learn more.

"Did I hear you?".

He said it was "the president's prerogative" to keep his discussions with Putin to himself.

"I was just doing my job", Coats told an audience at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado, defending a public rebuke he'd issued on Monday after Trump claimed Russian Federation hadn't targeted the U.S.

There has been no word from Russian Federation about a second Trump-Putin meeting. In his replies to the media queries, Trump disregarded the U.S. intelligence agencies' assertion of Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election.

"Look at the statement he made".

The US Director of National Intelligence has said he did not know what happened in the one-on-one meeting in Helsinki between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin has sought to ally with Trump at a time when US ties to Europe are fraying, and both presidents are critical of the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Donald Trump to invite Vladimir Putin to White House in autumn
The president campaigned on closer ties with Russian Federation , a goal that had been thwarted during his first year in office. Ms Sanders said "those discussions are already under way" for an autumn meeting between the two presidents.

It was only three days ago that Trump stood next to the Russian president in Helsinki and questioned USA intelligence findings that the Kremlin interfered in the 2016 election.

Senator Jeff Flake, a Republican and a vocal critic of Mr. Trump, had labelled his performance at the Helsinki press conference as "shameful".

The announcement seems to come as a surprise to US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who was told about it during a live interview at the Aspen Security Forum in the state of Colorado.

Take military spending: Trump sought to add $1.4 billion for fiscal year 2018 to the European Reassurance Initiative - a military effort to deter Russian aggression.

He added that he did not yet know what Mr Trump and Mr Putin discussed during their meeting, at which only their interpreters were also present. On Wednesday, Trump answered "no" to a reporter's question on whether Russian Federation was still targeting the United States, only to have Sanders say later he was saying "no" to answering any questions - not to the question itself.

Asked if he would single out Putin and hold him "personally responsible", Trump said to Glor that he would.

Mr. Trump, after calling former President Obama a "patsy" for Russian Federation in the CNBC interview, reiterated what he has said many times before - "Getting along with President Putin, getting along with Russian Federation, is a positive, not a negative". They are pushing so recklessly hard and hate the fact that I'll probably have a good relationship with Putin. There is US$380 million approved in the current budget for the programme, which is meant to help states strengthen election systems from hacking and other cyberattacks.

No Russian leader has visited the White House in almost a decade and it would be a diplomatic coup for Mr Putin, who has been isolated by the West for activities in Ukraine, Syria and the nerve agent attack in Salisbury.
