Corning Unveils Next Generation Gorilla Glass 6

Corning

With Gorilla Glass 6, the firm makes improvements over Gorilla Glass 5, offering not only the ability to withstand higher drops but also to survive multiple incidents.

John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, said that as consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the opportunity for potentially damaging drops is also on the rise.

With the new Gorilla Glass 6, Corning says that they are delivering the "toughest cover glass available for consumer mobile devices", and that it is their most durable to date. To improve cover glass performance, Corning scientists developed and engineered an entirely new material to address the challenge of multiple drops.

Today, Corning has announced a new version of Gorilla Glass, the sixth version, to be precise.

During the 2016-17 season, Leonard averaged a career-best 25.5 points a game and was third in the MVP voting. The contract does include an early-termination option for the 2020-21 season.

According to Corning, the average person drops their smartphone 7 times a year.

Corning's event included demos of the gadgetry the company uses to test Gorilla Glass, much of which involves dropping or slapping dummy phones against 120- and 180-grit sandpaper, which helps the company approximate contact with surfaces such as rough asphalt in a consistent manner. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions did not survive the first drop. It's made from a new glass composition that is chemically strengthened to give it a significantly higher level of compression compared to Gorilla Glass 5.

The new glass cover is also created to work with newer technologies like thinner bezels and wireless charging.

Corning says that Gorilla Glass 6 is now "being evaluated" from multiple customers and should reach the market in the next several months. "This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage". Take a look at the video below for more details.
