Trump Offers New Boast of Successful Meeting with Putin

Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo

President Donald Trump on Tuesday moved to limit the damage from his summit with Vladimir Putin, claiming he misspoke in appearing to accept the Russian leader's denial of election meddling, in a rebuke to U.S. intelligence chiefs.

During a joint press conference in Helsinki with Putin, Trump said while he has "great confidence" in the USA intelligence community, Putin was "very powerful" in his denial of Russian interference in the 2016 election, comments that he attempted to walk back Tuesday.

Corker, who will retire at the end of this Congress and who has been a critic of the president, said on Twitter he thought the "dam is finally breaking" on congressional opposition to some of Trump's most controversial policies, including his engagement with Putin and protectionist trade policies that have fueled new trade wars with European allies and China.

Trump received criticism from both sides of the aisle over remarks he made in his post-summit news conference on Monday.

The president, in Helsinki, also criticised the FBI, Democrats, Hillary Clinton and the special counsel's investigation of Russia's election activities and possible Trump campaign complicity - all as an occasionally smiling Putin stood beside him in the Finland presidential palace. "You know the president can do more damage in 15 minutes at a press conference than we can undo in six months of passing resolutions".

After a stormy North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels last week, Trump was accused by critics of prioritising his ties to Putin over the transatlantic alliance.

"I have to say, I came back and I said".

In the press conference on Monday, Trump called the United States "foolish", according to a Time transcript.

Early Wednesday, Trump was back to touting a meeting that he said would lead to "big results" and "many positive things" - including Russia's help with his efforts to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons.

House Speaker Paul Ryan quickly condemned Trump's comments, though he did not name Trump.

Once order was restored, he said he had been in the dark as to why a storm had swirled around his presidency since his Helsinki summit with Vladimir Putin. But he added, as he usually does, "It could be other people also".

After his remarks, the White House released a fact sheet on how the U.S. is "standing up to Russia's malign activities", a clear bid to counter the notion that Trump had been soft on Putin. "So just to repeat it, I said the word would instead of wouldn't", Trump told reporters.

On Tuesday, he said he should have said, "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russian Federation".

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said he concurred with U.S. intelligence assessments and added that "there is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russian Federation, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals". "[Charles E.] Schumer mentioned where I think we could find common ground to turn the screws". "That must be the intelligence agencies", the president joked. "Many positive things will come out of that meeting", he tweeted.
