How to protect yourself from West Nile virus

Certain species of mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, which, when transmitted to people, can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.

No human cases of West Nile Virus have been identified in 2018 in Windsor-Essex County but a positive mosquito pool is an indicator that the virus is in the community.

Southwestern public health is reminding local citizens to protect themselves against West Nile virus, caused by mosquito bites.

The reported case is out of Hinds County.

In addition to birds and humans, horses are also affected by West Nile virus.

What Is West Nile Virus?

Some people who contract West Nile develop neurological syndrome, which can be deadly.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness, or swollen lymph nodes.

In more severe cases, those infected can experience those symptoms in addition to coma, convulsions, vision loss, numbness, paralysis and more.
