Five things to know about the Ontario government's throne speech

Premier Doug Ford had promised to repeal and replace the controversial sex-ed curriculum when he ran for the Progressive Conservative leadership and repeated the pledge during the spring election.

It's just a week after the new government cancelled the province's emissions cap and trade program.

The Ford government cancelled cap and trade as part of its commitment to cut gas prices by $0.10 a litre. Elizabeth Dowdeswell said Thursday, reading from the throne speech prepared by Premier Doug Ford's PC government.

Ford ended nearly 15 years of Liberal government in the June 7 election.

Ford nonetheless stressed that priority and others in a statement Thursday, saying his government would get to work quickly so "people can see real change fast".

The PCs will introduce legislation to bring a halt to the four-month-old York University strike by teaching assistants and graduate assistants.

This September, students will be taught an outdated sex-ed curriculum that dates back 20 years, rather than the modernized curriculum that was instated by the Liberals in 2015.

The prospect of beer in corner stores was made by Ford as one of his campaign promises. He said the move would bring down electricity rates but struggled to explain how when asked repeatedly by reporters.

As already announced, the speech says the Tories are scrapping the cap-and-trade program, and plan to fight any attempt by the federal government to implement a carbon pricing plan in Ontario.

"Absolutely not, I'm here today, I'm taking questions", he said. The Government for the People will also send a message to the world that Ontario is open for business, and it will back up that message by lowering taxes and reducing regulatory burdens.

"You can count on your government to respect the men and women of Ontario's Police Services by freeing them from onerous restrictions that treat those in uniform as suspects of suspicion and scorn", the speech says.

Fraser also slammed the Tory pledge to repeal the sex ed curriculum and said claims that parents weren't consulted during its development are wrong.

Earlier this week, Ford's new Progressive Conservative government said teachers will use the 1998 version of the sex-ed curriculum this fall as consultations are carried out for a new document.
