Hamilton secures scorching home British GP pole ahead of Vettel

Hamilton was spun round at the first corner by Vettel's Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, but turned in a masterful display, and took advantage of two safety auto periods to finish behind Vettel.

Raikkonen was awarded a ten-second penalty for his trouble, which was at least double the sanction given to his team-mate Vettel for wiping Valterri Bottas a week ago but nowhere near the handicap suffered by Hamilton.

Hamilton made his way past Bottas on the following lap, with Raikkonen then taking his countryman for third, and that is how the leading four cars would cross the line in a frenetic ending.

Hamilton and Raikkonen approached Village together but the Finn locked up and slid into the side of the Mercedes, spinning the reigning World Champion, who dropped to the rear of the field.

Raikkonen received a 10-second penalty for the incident and said he accepted that it was his fault.

Hamilton dropped down to last place but executed a superb recovery drive to second, finishing behind race victor and title rival Vettel.

The Silverstone result saw Vettel open up an eight point lead over Hamilton.

Leaked promo material reveals new Galaxy Note 9 S Pen
As we get closer to Samsung's Unpacked press conference on August 9th, we're bound to see even more Note 9 leaks... like this one. A source with a respectable track record has leaked what appears to be promotional material for the Galaxy Note 9 .

Lapping well around the 5.891-kilometre course, Hamilton soon moved into the points and was 25 seconds off Vettel by lap 9, with the German 5 seconds ahead of Bottas at the front.

Hartley's scary FP3 crash ended his weekend - the damage sustained ruling him out of qualifying and eventually the race itself. "I gave it everything I could and it was so close between these Ferraris".

The race had shortened to an 11-lap sprint, 11 laps for Bottas to keep Vettel in his mirrors and Hamilton to keep Raikkonen, who went past Max Verstappen's fading Red Bull around Stowe, off his tail.

All the leaders would pit for the Medium compound based on Kimi's pace, but Hamilton would wait for several laps before stopping in the hope of making up places later on.

Hamilton was angered after being hit by Raikkonen at Turn 3 on the opening lap, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff subsequently told Sky Sports that Mercedes was questioning if the contact was deliberate, citing James Allison as making the suggestion during the race. I gave everything I could, and I was struggling to stand.

Vettel entered the race one point ahead of Hamilton in the drivers' championship standings.

"We try to kill their (Mercedes') magic, obviously that's what we have tried over the last years and I think here and there we have succeeded quite well. They have really caught up", the F1 legend Lauda said after Hamilton qualified on Pole. We knew a one-stop was not going to be easy, but we chose to take the risk. "My view, I did the best that I could, but there seems to be opposite looks of what I'm doing unfortunately".
