Wales name Wayne Pivac as Warren Gatland’s successor

Wayne Pivac led Scarlets to their first major trophy in 13 years

Pivac's successful tenure at Welsh region Scarlets - last season he guided them to their first European Cup semi-final in a decade - had placed him as favourite to fill the vacancy.

The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced that Wayne Pivac will take over as head coach from Warren Gatland after the next Rugby World Cup in 2019.

Pivac, 55, who will be the 23rd Wales national coach since David Nash was appointed head coach in 1967, said he would do as much as possible to protect the legacy of Gatland.

The Welsh Rugby Union has opted for Pivac over fellow Kiwis Dave Rennie and Scott Robinson, who were also on the shortlist for the post that will be vacated by Gatland upon completion of Japan 2019. The New Zealander has won three Six Nations championships, including two Grand Slams since taking over in late 2007.

But before the 2014-15 campaign began, Easterby left to become Ireland forwards coach and Pivac took charge.

"What Martyn Phillips has achieved here is fairly unique in world sport, I have a further 12 months to dedicate my time to the Scarlets and, in the background, the necessary plans and preparations can be put in place to ensure a smooth transition after the World Cup".

'I'll do everything in my power to live up to the expectations of the hugely passionate and knowledgeable rugby loving Welsh public'.

"It will be an almighty challenge, but one that I'm more than ready for and one that I will relish".

The appointment of Pivac, who inspired the Scarlets to the Pro12 title in 2017, comes after a two-year process that has involved meticulous research and extensive consultation undertaken by WRU CEO Martyn Phillips and chairman Gareth Davies.
