Green Day's 'American Idiot' climbs United Kingdom charts ahead of Trump visit

To protest the president's visit, a campaign has launched to get Green Day's song "American Idiot" to the top spot on United Kingdom charts in time for Trump's arrival. The song has also been popping up on the iTunes singles chart and Chart data confirmed that it re-entered their UK Top 20 earlier this week.

The song, which debuted in 2004, came out during a different Republican administration, that of former President George W. Bush.

The campaign asked people to download "American Idiot" between Friday, July 6, and Friday, July 13, to push the 14-year-old single to the top of the Official U.K. Charts.

Green Day has yet to publicly comment on the campaign on its social media accounts, although they did share a tweet from Sen.

The titular track on the band's 2004 rock opera resonated with a generation of eyeliner-wearing, anti-establishment punks while at the same time playing ad nauseam on vehicle radios in American suburbia, spending six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 100. In response to reports that Trump sent North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a copy of the Elton John song "Rocket Man", the senator joked that Kim should return the favor by giving Trump "American Idiot".
