Former Illini star Kevin Anderson ousts Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Wimbledon

From there, the tall and powerful Anderson kicked on whilst Federer stalled.

Back to deuce. From there, it all began to change.

In the fourth set, Federer and Anderson alternated winning the first six games until Anderson broke Federer's serve to take a 4-3 lead and then Anderson went up 5-3 thanks to strong serving before he clinched the set.

The comeback was just beginning. "I think I had my chances, so it's disappointing".

Update: Federer not only dropped his first set, but his second as well. In his first four matches the Swiss had been utterly dominant on serve, winning 92 % of points on first serve, his best ever serving stats in his 20 years at Wimbledon.

"So no, I didn't see it coming".

From there, Anderson came all the way back, shocking Federer with a 13-11 triumph in the fifth and final set, capping off the four-plus hour match with a bullet serve up the middle that Federer returned long. But there was more.

Federer was attempting to reach his 13th semi-final at Wimbledon and move closer to title number nine, both of which would have broken his own records.

Federer is a flawless 12-0 in Sets thus far and a ideal 4-0 in Matches at Wimbledon 2018.

"I just kept saying "today is going to be your day".

"If you go out there with doubts or unsure what's going to happen, like I maybe did a little bit in that first set, it's not going to go your way". Depends against who you play you have less or more chances to win.

Wimbledon 2018: Djokovic beats Kei Nishikori; enters semifinals
The Swiss lost the set in a flurry of aces, with Anderson's relentless, powerful serve sending the match into a decider. Anderson never had made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon until this week, carried by his booming serve.

Wimbledon 2018 -- Men's quarterfinal matches
World number one Nadal faces a tricky test against power-hitter del Potro in his first Wimbledon quarter-final since 2011. The other quarter-final features American John Isner and Canadian former runner-up Milos Raonic .

But Anderson is not letting his thoughts run away, drawing on his experience of reaching the final of last year's US Open. However, when Anderson and Isner face off, there will be plenty of aces and quick points. Where once he would have buckled on the big stage against someone like Federer he now relishes the task. "You're never really safe".

Federer was completely out of sorts by now and his uncharacteristic struggles on his forehand didn't improve in the fourth set.

Anderson then served it out, ending things with a 205kph service victor, and raised both arms overhead.

No. 9 John Isner vs.

With the scores deadlocked at 11-11 in the final set, and no obvious break in serve forthcoming, Anderson profited as Federer started to show signs of strain. Even when he managed to do that in the second game of the second set, Federer recovered to break back and take it to a tiebreak, which the No. 1 seed won.

It was an extraordinary turnaround after Federer won the first set in 26 scintillating minutes against a player he had beaten four times out of four without dropping a set.

Anderson will now move into his first semi-finals at the tournament; taking on the victor of John Isner and Milos Raonic for a place in a final against what may be Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

That earned a code violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Later in the match, Djokovic was clearly frustrated and complained of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for a racket throw. He's always like a big war for me.

Later, Ramos warned Djokovic for a time violation, but that didn't seem to faze the Serb. But I wouldn't necessarily say I've been playing like incredible. "I really do. I think with the performances I've had, I deserve to be in the semi-finals", Djokovic, whose last major title came at the 2016 French Open, said.

"I don't want to stop here".
