Criminal case sheds light on Apple self-driving car tech

He is accused of downloading the plan for a circuit board for the automated auto just days before he quit to go to a Chinese self-driving vehicle startup. About 5,000 of Apple's 135,000 employees were allowed access to information about its self-driving vehicle project, but only 2,700 of them had access to the secret databases that Zhang had access to, according to the complaint. He said he wanted to move back to China, citing his mother's poor health as the reason, but later disclosed he meant to work for XMotors, the Federal Bureau of Investigation complaint said.

The technical detail in the complaint "would only have been possible if Apple complied" with investigators, said Bryant Walker Smith, an assistant professor of law at the University of SC who has studied issues around autonomous vehicles. He also told his supervisor that he'd be going to work for XMotors, a Chinese startup company focused on electric automobiles and driverless vehicle technology. During the meeting, he also told a supervisor that he was joining Chinese electric auto startup XMotors. After turning in his company devices, Apple noticed an unusual download activity, leading them to believe he obtained and kept some information illegally.

Mr. Zhang's case will go before a judge in Santa Clara County, California and while the maximum penalties are indeed severe for a guy who just had a kid, we'd be unsurprised to see Apple push for those maximum sentences, given the amount of data that Zhang made off with.

Though he initially denied taking company property, he later admitted that he took several items, including two circuit boards and a Linux server. Upon looking at time stamps, this visit coincided with data download times, and Zhang left with a box of hardware. While a lawyer has been appointed to represent Zhang, there is no further comment from either the defendant or his lawyer as of this writing. We also don't know if Apple's IP was successfully transferred to a third party by Mr. Zhang before his arrest.

Upon exiting the store, she climbed in a black Nissan - the vehicle was open and the key's were in the ignition - and drove home. They even tried to explain that the model she was trying to return wasn't on file but she apparently did not want to hear it.

The FBI said the data taken included "engineering schematics, technical reference manuals, and technical reports". Obviously, he's now violated that agreement.

Zhang also admitted to Air Dropping information from his iPhones to his wife's laptop. Zhang is facing federal charges of Theft of Trade Secrets, with recommended penalties of 10 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, a $100 special assessment and three years of supervised release.

An Apple spokesman said in a statement to Bloomberg that the company "takes confidentiality and the protection of our intellectual property very seriously". "We're working with authorities on this matter and will do everything possible to make sure this individual and other individuals involved are held accountable for their actions".
