British Defense Chief Says Russian 'Attack' Led to Woman's Death

British police have declared a

Dawn Sturgess, 44, was one of five people who have become became critically after being exposed to the military-grade nerve agent in the Salisbury area. "Police and security forces are working urgently to determine facts of this incident, which is now being investigated as a murder".

"This latest horrendous turn of events has only served to strengthen the resolve of our investigation team as we work to identify those responsible for this outrageous, reckless and barbaric act", Neil Basu, Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer, said.

Dawn Sturgess has died and her partner Charlie Rowley is still fighting for his live in hospital, after being poisoned close to where an ex-Russian spy was struck down with the Novichok nerve agent.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Alexander Shulgin said Moscow would demand evidence from London supporting the words of British leaders about the possible involvement of Russia in the Amesbury poisoning, according to an interview published by Russian newspaper Izvestia on Monday.

Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin said it would be "absurd" to suggest that Russian Federation was involved in Sturgess's death.

Ms Sturgess collapsed at about 10.15am on 30 June and was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Ms Sturgess has since died in hospital.

Javid said earlier on Sunday that police had a working hypothesis that the two poisoning incidents were connected. They had been exposed to an agent known as Novichok.

Samples from the two showed they had been exposed to a nerve agent after touching a contaminated item, police said.

Russian ex-agent Sergey Skripal, who received asylum in United Kingdom after being released in a spy Exchange in 2010, and his daughter Yulia were treated for weeks by poisoning with a nervous agent, before receiving medical discharge.

MailOnline has obtained CCTV of Mr Rowley (left), who is said to be on the brink of death, as it was revealed his girlfriend Dawn Sturgess, 44, (right) passed away in Salisbury last night. "I think someone from counter-terrorism needs to come here and tell us what they know", he said.

Professor Paul Cosford of Public Health England has said, however, that "As a precaution we still advise the public not to pick up any odd items such as needles, syringes or unusual containers".

"Our focus and priority at this time is to identify and locate any container that we believe may be the source of the contamination", Basu, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, told reporters outside New Scotland Yard. Mr Rowley was then taken to hospital at 3.30pm the same day, which is when police were informed. "Their evidence is vital for both public safety and for the investigation".
