UK Prime Minister Theresa May fights to stop Cabinet exodus over Brexit

May appoints new Brexit secretary who once called feminists 'obnoxious bigots'

May said she had chaired a "productive" meeting of her government, unswayed by the resignations of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit negotiator David Davis that rocked the government on Monday.

Johnson had been due to host a summit about the western Balkans on Monday afternoon but was instead holed up in his official residence with close advisers, considering his position. Trump isn't expected to directly address Brexit, nor were he and Johnson scheduled to meet.

May named one of her most loyal ministers, Jeremy Hunt, to replace Johnson in the job of Britain's top diplomat.

The front page of the respected broadsheet Le Monde says Davis Davis "slams the door" behind him on his way out of the Cabinet and inside says his snub to May's Brexit plan "could not have been more violent".

"It is also heartening to see that preparations are being made for a "no deal" Brexit".

Davis himself expressed regret that Johnson had quit, and said it would be "wrong" for his departure to trigger a major rebellion.

The former minister also sent a clear message for those itching for a second Brexit referendum, saying they lacked a necessary understanding of the situation.

The latest blow came as the media in London reported that one Conservative member of parliament (MP) has submitted a formal letter calling for a confidence vote in May as the leader of the party.

Speaking at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Prime Minister May insisted that her Chequers deal delivered on the "red lines" that she set out in her Lancaster House speech past year.

Set to be published in a white paper on Thursday, the plan envisages Britain continuing to trade freely with the remaining European Union in goods under a "common rulebook", while accepting restrictions on trade in services.

Brussels has repeatedly warned it will not accept "cherry-picking" of elements of its single market.

Mr Wilson praised the American President for his firmness with European companies and EU leaders on matters of trade and security.

Responding to the news of Mr Davis' resignation, GSD Leader Keith Azopardi took to Twitter where he wrote: "The resignation of David Davis as Brexit Secretary marks the start of a long hot summer of uncertainty in negotiations to leave the Union".

Leaving the European Union would restore democracy to the land, returning power from Brussels to our own elected politicians, enabling them to find British solutions to British problems.

The ambassador added May had shown strong leadership and that the trip would enhance the special relationship between the United States and Britain.

Yesterday, in his resignation letters, Johnson conceded "that dream is dying".

Speaking at the Institute of global and European Affairs in Dublin, Minister Coveney said there had not been a clear British negotiating position for many months.

"I don't think that would be sensible, it would cause an terrible lot of uncertainty, nobody would know with whom they were dealing, and so I think she will survive for those reasons", she said.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street in London, Britain, July 10, 2018.

Want to know what's really going on with Brexit?

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.
