"Ozil Bent, Disappointed and Offended"- Father

World Cup criticism of Mesut Ozil labelled ‘pathetic’ as Arsenal star is defended

The father of German football player Mesut Ozil urged his son on Sunday to quit the country's national squad after he was "made the scapegoat" for their shock first-round defeat at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

The World champions finished bottom of Group F in a disastrous Russian Federation 2018 campaign and while several stars underperformed, the Arsenal midfielder become a notable scapegoat from media and former players.

Ozil and team-mate Ilkay Gundogan came under fire before the World Cup after being pictured meeting the controversial Turkish president Recept Tayyip Erdogan.

After the World Cup, Germany team manager Olivier Bierhoff claimed Ozil's decision to meet with Erdogan and not address the issue afterwards affected the squad and even claimed he regretted calling up the Arsenal man to the World Cup squad.

"If I were in his place, I would say: 'Thank you, but that's enough, '" Mustafa told German newspaper BILD.

Whilst German FA president Reinhard Grindel has called for Ozil to explain himself over the photo. He's played in the national team for nine years moreover, became a world champion. "He has contributed a lot for this country", he said. He is now whistling from the stands, Mesut made a scapegoat. "I can understand if he feels insulted", said the midfielder's father. He also said that his son had taken the photo with Erdogan out of "politeness" and it was never meant to be a political statement.

And he added: "The hurt has grown too strong".

"We have to wait for the athletic analysis and see if Joachim Low continues to plan with him", he said. His ineffective performances in the first two group matches of Germany saw him benched in the final group game, which eventually turned out to be their last match in the ongoing world cup.

"In my opinion the only reason to say these things is to try and save your own head".
