Man harasses woman over Puerto Rico shirt, says it’s ‘un-American’

Facebook A woman was attacked by this man at a park near Chicago because she was wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt

Mia Irizarry rented a pavilion at Cook County Forest Preserves in IL for an afternoon picnic on June 14.

A woman was harassed by a man in an IL park for wearing a shirt displaying the Puerto Rican flag.

Eventually the first officer on the scene takes notes of Irizarry's account of the incident and says that he was at the scene due to the separate incident, noting that she was not being attacked though acknowledging she felt threatened. "You're not gonna change us, you know that?" he says, insinuating that she is an interloper. "You should be wearing United States of America flag", he said.

Irizarry had rented a forest preserve pavilion for a birthday party and was issued a permit for the event. In the video, an older, unidentified white man, is seen provoking Irizarry and aggressively asking why she is wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt in America. The man resumes his abuse, saying: "You're not American, if you were American you wouldn't wear that". But Preckwinkle demurred when asked if the officer should be fired, saying she doesn't know the specific rules in the Forest Preserves for conduct unbecoming of an officer.

A law enforcement officer whose uniform has the last name "Connor" stands on the other side of the picnic area. "Can you please grab him?" to which he turns his head and walks in the opposite direction.

When the man again tries to get in her face, her brother arrives and intervenes.

The man in the video was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, according to the Forest Preserves agency, which described the man as intoxicated.

The park location was not identified in the Facebook post, but a Twitter army tracked the location as one of the areas supervised by the Forest Preserves Department of Cook County, which includes Chicago.

Video of the incident went viral, gathering more than 1 million views on Facebook alone. "People have just as much right to be here as you and when you're drunk, you don't belong here". Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in United States presidential primaries, but not in presidential elections.

Ricardo Rosselló, the governor of Puerto Rico, spoke out about the incident on Twitter, writing, "We will be looking into this incident as our offices in D.C. are in contact with local and state authorities, demanding that this officer be expelled from the police force".

"We have worked very hard since 2010 to make the Forest Preserves of Cook County a welcoming and safe place for all", she tweeted.

The Trump administration has received criticism for its treatment of Puerto Rico, particularly for its response after Hurricane Maria struck last September. We are proud USA citizens.

Speaking to CNN's Erin Burnett on Tuesday, Puerto Rico's governor said he was "appalled and disgusted" by the video. From 1917, Puerto Rican residents have been US citizens and have the ability to vote in USA presidential primaries, though not in presidential elections.
