Liverpool open talks over Stoke City star ahead of £13 million move

Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool are confident of making Xherdan Shaqiri their third summer signing after opening transfer talks with Stoke City over the Switzerland global.

Jurgen Klopp has been eyeing Shaqiri as a potential acquisition since before the World Cup and he is now prepared to make his move to trigger the release clause embedded in the Swiss winger's contract.

Now, Pearce writes that talks have been opened with Stoke as Liverpool look to capitalise on the Potters being relegated last season.

Jürgen Klopp is keen to add the 26-year-old to his attacking options for next season and the winger wants to remain in the Premier League following Stoke's relegation to the Championship.

Operation To Rescue Boys Trapped In Thai Cave Resumes
An ambulance believed to be carrying one of the rescued schoolboys leaves from Tham Luang cave complex on day two of the rescue. Relatives say the boys had been inside the cave during the dry season, when the labyrinthine complex is easier to navigate.

Shaqiri was among Switzerland's best players in their run to the last 16 of the World Cup, scoring a late victor in their only victory, against Serbia.

Former Stoke boss Mark Hughes signed Shaqiri from Inter Milan in August 2015 for £12million.

The forward has been a player on Liverpool's radar since 2014 as the club, then managed by Brendan Rodgers, tried to prise him away from Bayern Munich, who blocked the deal, according to the player.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers. Before the World Cup, it was revealed that his ridiculously cheap release clause was attracting interest from several Premier League clubs with Liverpool said to be interested.
