'Hooyah! Mission accomplished' greets Thai boys rescued from cave

Doctors said the 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach who were rescued from a Thai cave this week are on bed rest but are in a "good condition".

The worldwide soccer federation, FIFA, had already invited the boys to attend the World Cup final in Russia this Sunday.

The "Wild Boars" soccer team and their coach got trapped on June 23 when they set out to explore the vast cave complex after soccer practice, when a rainy season downpour flooded the tunnels.

Paul Pogba dedicated France's World Cup semi-final win against Belgium to the 12 boys who survived a harrowing ordeal trapped underground in Thailand.

Now there are calls from hundreds of Australians on social media for the expert medic and cave diver to be handed the Australian of the Year award for his heroics in the incredible rescue mission.

"When I saw the diver and the kid on the horizon, I still didn't know if it was a casualty or if it was a kid so I was very scared", said Ivan Karadzic, one of the rescuers inside the cave.

As celebrations rang out across the world over the stranger-than-fiction Thai cave rescue's success, a hero who was the last to leave the mountain found out his father had died. Officials said they emerged from the cave "healthy" shortly after the last rescues were made, July 10, 2018.

He also told reporters that the first four boys who were rescued are now able to eat normal food.

Virtually every major news outlet in Australia (not to mention every major worldwide news service) ran live updates and lead stories on the mission; Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop gave daily press conferences and US President Donald Trump, not known for his effusions of compassion, even spared a tweet for the rescue effort.

A message posted on the English Premier League club's Twitter account said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected". It comes after he posted photos from inside the Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai on the final day of rescue operations.

The most risky part of the journey out of the labyrinth cave system is the first kilometer, during which they are required to squeeze through a narrow flooded channel.

Two of the first group had a lung infection as well, and Thongchai said they would need medicine for seven days.

Mr Osottanakorn added that parents of the last batch of children would be allowed to visit their loved ones at the hospital last night.

Walker tweeted: "Amazing news that all of the Thai kids are out of the cave safely!"

"We believe this simple gesture can help these faces recover the joy and smiles that no child should ever lose", Vieira said in the letter.

The boys were in isolation in the hospital to prevent infections by outsiders.

They joined their teammates in quarantine there and will remain in hospital.

"I have one [of] the world's best engineering teams, who normally design spaceships and spacesuits, working on this thing 24 hours a day", Musk wrote in an email to Dick Stanton, one of the leaders of the search and rescue effort in Thailand, on July 8.

President Donald Trump joined those paying tribute to the rescuers.
