Champion Russell Knox eyes Ryder Cup | Ireland

Russell Knox sinks incredible back-to-back putts to win the Irish Open

Knox started the day six shots off the lead, but shot a six under 66, which included a monster 40 foot putt on the 18th to secure a play off position against Fox.

Scotland's Russell Knox beat New Zealand's Ryan Fox on the first hole of a play-off to win the Irish Open.

Ryan Fox has fallen agonisingly short of his maiden European Tour title.

Paul Dunne and Graeme McDowell carded rounds of 71 as they finished on even par for the tournament.

In the playoff, Fox left himself favourite on the first hole.

"It maybe wasn't quite as good the last three days, but I putted a lot better today".

"I said to James (caddie James Williams): 'Well, we've already made this putt so it can't be too hard'".

On the first sudden-death play-off, Knox hit into exactly the same spot that he had putted out so remarkably on the last hole in regulation.

"For me to have made it twice in a row.I'm very lucky".

"I hit the shots I wanted to down the stretch, felt comfortable out there and it was close". That's why I play golf. I'm not putting any pressure on myself.

Fox said the theory all week had been to back his driver and he had responded by hitting some of the biggest distances off the tee.

A triple-bogey on the second looked to have ended Rahm's chances but he birdied the next two and was back in red figures on the day when he chipped in for an eagle on the sixth. "Unbelievable. I can't believe I'm holding this (trophy)". But well done to Russ.

The only way it could have gone better is if the apple had found its way into the hole, but you can't have it all.

"Making two of them from an nearly identical position is obviously a bit of a bonus". The way I managed to do it, holing those two long putts, it was just my time.

"To make the Ryder Cup team, you have to win tournaments", Knox said.

Jorge Campillo (65) finished in third place, a shot further back, and defending champion Jon Rahm was in a share of fourth after a 66.

Rory McIlroy has vowed not to repeat the mistakes of his US Open campaign as he seeks a first major title since 2014 in next week's Open Championship at Carnoustie.
