British man injured in Amesbury incident regains consciousness

The surviving victim of the Amesbury novichok poisoning has regained consciousness and experienced a "small but significant improvement to his condition", a spokeswoman for Salisbury district hospital said.

"It may be that it will never be possible to establish such a definitive link, but (the Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down) are already crystal clear that it is the same nerve agent type - a novichok - one that killed Dawn and poisoned Sergei and Yulia Skripal as well as Nick Bailey and Charlie Rowley".

Charlie Rowley is now conscious, but is in a critical but stable condition, Salisbury District Hospital has said.

Wiltshire Police said the public "should not be alarmed by this", adding: "Those involved have the training and expertise to safely remove the vehicle".

At the weekend, his girlfriend Dawn Sturgess, 44, tragically died after also being poisoned.

Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the Skripal case and suggested the British security services carried out the attack to stoke anti-Moscow hysteria, an assertion London calls absurd.

"Clearly that is our main line of inquiry, but our investigation must be led by the evidence available and the facts".

The Kremlin said it was sorry to hear of Ms Sturgess's death but called the suggestion that Russian Federation was involved "absurd".

A Bristol company came under fire for its "Novichok" vodka when its launch coincided with the death of Dawn Sturgess after exposure to the notorious toxin.

More than 100 police are working to try and search all areas where Sturgess and Rowley had been before they became ill nine days ago.

Six locations visited by the couple have been cordoned off, including Mr Rowley's home on Muggleton Road in Amesbury, a Boots shop and a baptist church.

Mr Basu said it was also "implausible" that the poisoning was not linked with the attack on the Skripals in March.

A Kremlin spokesman on Monday (Tuesday NZT) expressed condolences over Sturgess' death.

Javid, who is chairing a meeting of the government's emergency committee on Monday, has said there were no plans at this stage for further sanctions against Russian Federation. He said, "It's Britain's problem and the problem of how interested Britain is in a real investigation".
