USA secretary of state unconcerned over 'gangster-like' N Korea talks

Mike Pompeo meets with Kim Yong Chol for a second day of talks at the Park Hwa Guest House in Pyongyang North Korea

Following his meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterpart Kang Kyung-wha and Taro Kono, Pompeo said while there was progress made on denuclearization, the United States and its allies will continue to apply worldwide sanctions until North Korea completely abandons its nuclear arsenal.

"Particularly, they have suggested that they are disappointed by the United States insistence on focusing on the denuclearisation plans over what they described as big-picture issues", she said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, reacting to a provocative statement from North Korea, said that if Washington's demands were "gangster-like", then the world is a gangster. Isaac Stone Fish, a senior fellow at the Asia Society, joins CBSN with more.

"Look, people are going to make stray comments after meetings". In that joint statement, North Korea committed "to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Earlier reports pointed to progress being made between the two countries, with commitments for new discussions on denuclearisation and the repatriation of the remains of American soldiers killed during the Korean War.

President Donald Trump was accused of forcing the North Korea summit "for cheap headlines" by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, who said POTUS had made himself "look like a fool".

The Trump administration worked for months to win support from China for its "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions to isolate North Korea, which does most of its global trade with the Chinese.

Pompeo said the discussion includes "achieving what Chairman Kim and President Trump both agreed to, which is the complete denuclearization of North Korea".

In a statement issued by a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman and carried by the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea lashed out at the U.S. for seeking "unilateral and forced denuclearisation" from Pyongyang.

During that meeting, leaders will also address the destruction of a missile-testing facility in North Korea, which was first brought up during the summit in Singapore.

The regime's belief that the weapons are needed to deter a USA attack dates back almost 70 years to the still-unresolved Korean War, and will take more than a handshake to dispel.

The statement North Korea released after those meetings sharply criticized Pompeo for failing to follow through on the progress Trump and Kim had made in Singapore. When we spoke to them about the scope of denuclearization, they did not push back.

President Donald Trump suggested on July 9 that Beijing may have responded to Washington's tariffs on Chinese goods by pressuring North Korea to issue a sour media statement about its talks with America's top diplomat.

On Sunday, Iowa GOP Senator Joni Ernst said the US should restart its military exercises with South Korea if talks don't continue.

The U.S.is "fatally mistaken" if it thinks North Korea can be pressured into accepting its demands, the statement continued, adding that a breakdown in the North Korean-U.S. relationship would mean "there is no guarantee that this will not result in yet another tragedy".
