UK's May loses two key cabinet ministers over Brexit row

"This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary", a spokesperson for Prime Minister Theresa May said.

The appointment of Hunt, the long-serving health minister, sees a close May ally replace the maverick Johnson, and could alter the Brexit balance of May's top ministerial team.

However, Mr Johnson - whose departure on Monday followed that of Brexit Secretary David Davis and several junior figures - accused Mrs May of pursuing a "semi-Brexit".

Davis resigned late Sunday, saying May's plan to maintain close trade and regulatory ties with the European Union gave "too much away, too easily".

After two hours in the Commons defending her plans, the PM faced Tory MPs behind closed doors - with many warning her offer gave too much away.

May imposed on her cabinet on Friday. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

"In a resignation letter, Davis said the "'common rule book' policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense". He also warned that Britain was "headed for the status of a colony" within the bloc.

The withdrawal agreement - the prerequisite for an EU-UK trade deal and a transition period - needs to be agreed by the end of the year the latest in order to have enough time for ratification in the EU and the UK before Britain leaves the EU next March.

The prime minister's official spokesman said she would fight any attempt to oust her as prime minister if the required 48 Tory MPs called for a contest.

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland.

"The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position and possibly an inescapable one", he said in his letter.

Davis said he did not want his resignation to become a rallying cry for May's ouster. In his letter to the prime minister explaining his decision, Mr Davis said he felt it was "less and less likely" that Britain would leave the customs union and the single market, articles of faith for Brexiteers.

Jeremy Hunt, the current health secretary for the United Kingdom, has been named the country's new foreign secretary after Boris Johnson resigned earlier Monday.

"I'd have to deliver this". "That's not a tenable position". However, should she survive such a challenge, Conservative Party rules prevent her opponents from making another try to unseat her for at least a year.

Leaving the gathering, leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said he did not think there would be a confidence vote over Mrs May. He urged May to abandon her plans and take a tougher line with Brussels.
