U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson Resigns Over Brexit

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson leaves 10 Downing Street in London after attending the weekly cabinet meeting on June 12, 2018.

But leading pro-Brexit legislator Jacob Rees-Mogg said "I don't think a no-confidence vote is immediately in the offing".

He told the Prime Minister: 'As I said then, the Government now has a song to sing.

He added that plans to create a common rulebook for goods and agrifoods "will make it much more hard to do free trade deals" - a key goal of the Brexit supporters.

Only three days ago, May appeared to have agreed on a deal with her fractured Cabinet on the UK's post-Brexit relationship with the EU.

Government unity began to fray within hours.

Some Brexit-supporting lawmakers are angry at the proposals, saying they will keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

"The Chequers Car Crash crosses Theresa May's own red lines, it certainly fails Labour's six tests and it is a million miles away from the kind of Brexit people thought they were getting - whether they voted Leave or Remain in 2016".

Johnson gave a scathing verdict on Theresa May's Brexit plans tonight as his resignation letter said the "Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

The BBC reported that Johnson said in his resignation letter that May has put off decisions about how Britain will leave the European Union, warning that "we appear to be heading for a semi-Brexit, with large parts of the economy still locked in the EU system, but with no United Kingdom control over that system".

Boris Johnson blasted for posing for resignation photos
Jeremy Hunt, who has been health secretary for the past six years, was a Remain campaigner in the 2016 European Union referendum. The Guardian says the PM has faced down Brexit rebels "for now", reporting May's warning that divided cabinets lose elections.

Britain and the European Union hope to reach broad agreement by October so the national parliaments of the remaining countries can ratify a deal before Britain leaves.

European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that "the mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations and it is still very far from being resolved".

The resignations of two of her most senior Cabinet ministers comes amid growing talk of a leadership challenge.

In his resignation letter, Johnson said: 'Brexit should be about opportunity and hope.

Why so many resignations at once?

Matt Hancock replaced Hunt as health secretary, while Attorney General Jeremy Wright was appointed as minister of digital culture, media and sport, Hancock's old job. She did not immediately name a replacement for Johnson.

Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister also resigned.

Davis insisted he did not want his resignation to become a rallying cry for May's ouster.

At least 48 Tory MPs - 15% of the party's 316-strong representation in the Commons - must write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to trigger a no-confidence vote.
