Hunter was born Arthur Andrew Kelm on July 11, 1931, in New York City, but later moved to California when he was young.
With no dramatic training, Hunter was cast in a minor role in the 1950 drama, "The Lawless". At the age of 15, he entered the Coast Guard after lying about his age. "I'm very grateful for this road that I've been on - it's been a good one".
It was well-known Hollywood lore that that studio head Jack Warner was "annoyed" that his studio did not have a record company to capitalize on Hunter's vocal skills, so he started one.

Though his fame soared in the 1950s and 1960s, Hunter later faded from sight, returning in the 1980s to a second act of a sort as the star of cult films, notably John Waters'Polyester (1981) and Paul Bartel's Lust in the Dust (1985); Hunter also starred in Grease 2.
Despite being publicly closeted for much of his life, Hunter had relationships with Psycho star Anthony Perkins and figure skater Ronnie Robertson before settling down with Glaser.
