But in his memoir, "Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star", Hunter recounted the stresses of being a love object to millions of young women when he was, in reality, a gay man.

Hunter was born Arthur Andrew Kelm on July 11, 1931, in New York City, but later moved to California when he was young.
With no dramatic training, Hunter was cast in a minor role in the 1950 drama, "The Lawless". At the age of 15, he entered the Coast Guard after lying about his age. "I'm very grateful for this road that I've been on - it's been a good one".
It was well-known Hollywood lore that that studio head Jack Warner was "annoyed" that his studio did not have a record company to capitalize on Hunter's vocal skills, so he started one.
Hunter also launched a career in music and had his first hit single "Young Love" in 1957.
Hunter was a mega star, most remembered for 1958's classic Damn Yankees.
He revealed he had been told by his partner Glaser someone was planing on writing a book about him, telling the publication in 2015: "I thought, 'Look, get it from the horse's mouth and not from some other horse's a** after I'm dead an gone".
Though his fame soared in the 1950s and 1960s, Hunter later faded from sight, returning in the 1980s to a second act of a sort as the star of cult films, notably John Waters'Polyester (1981) and Paul Bartel's Lust in the Dust (1985); Hunter also starred in Grease 2.
Despite being publicly closeted for much of his life, Hunter had relationships with Psycho star Anthony Perkins and figure skater Ronnie Robertson before settling down with Glaser.
