IPhone ownership top indicator of wealth in United States in 2016

Just by looking at her with an iPad tells you there's a good chance she's well off

New research coming from the United States has found some concrete evidence regarding the direct relationship between wealth and iPhone ownership: iPhone owners, most of the time, are rich.

In the 2016 study, researchers were able to guess if a person belonged to a household with an income within the top quarter of the population, be it a single adult or two parents and dependents, simply by the subject's disclosure that they own a non-specific iPhone about 69 percent of the time.

A new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research, highlighted by Business Insider, aims to infer demographics based on consumer behavior and media consumption.

"Across all years in our data, no individual brand is as predictive of being high-income as owning an Apple iPhone in 2016", researchers Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica wrote.

With (worrying) reports out of the USA that people who shop online using an Apple device can be charged a premium as much as 25 per cent due to the perception Apple fans are less price sensitive comes a new study that suggests that iPhone users are, indeed, richer than their Android-using counterparts.

But leading pro-Brexit legislator Jacob Rees-Mogg said "I don't think a no-confidence vote is immediately in the offing". The resignations of two of her most senior Cabinet ministers comes amid growing talk of a leadership challenge.

The study included the top predictors for other years. It was followed by being a Verizon Wireless customer at 61% and owning an Android handset at 59.5%.

It seems that owning an iPad back in 2016 was also a good indicator of wealth, though at 66.9 percent, it wasn't as fancy as owning an iPhone.

In 1992, the strongest sign of a rich family was if they used Grey Poupon mustard, while in 2004, it was Land O' Lakes butter and Kikkoman soy sauce. More than 6,000 people were surveyed to acquire the data. While the iPhone, and Apple products in general, are known to be high-priced premium devices, the rise in rank may also be attributed to general rise of smartphone ownership among people since the original's launch in 2007.

The findings show a distinct difference in wealth indicators over the years. Having a heated seat in your vehicle or using dishwasher detergent were also good wealth indicators.
