EU’s Tusk criticizes Trump over attitude on European allies

Trump scolds NATO members days ahead of summit

As The Washington Post argues, there could be a "catastrophe". Most commentators see the two events as inextricably linked. Trump is expected to participate in a one-on-one meeting with Putin in Finland next week.

This is a potent narrative.

The US president will have also delighted Mrs May by saying that he might take time during his United Kingdom visit to speak with former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who he described as "a friend of mine". Allies are braced for a barrage of invective from Trump for not spending enough on defence, and are apprehensive that his often skeptical tone on the alliance that has underpinned European security for 70 years might turn into outright hostility. The United States, which spent $685.9 billion on defense in 2017, now makes up 51.1 percent of NATO's combined GDP. It also ignores other essential aspects of providing security. "On top of this the European Union has a Trade Surplus of US$151 Million with the USA, with big Trade Barriers on USA goods. NO!"

Trump is pushing for other countries to spend more on their own defense, while taking credit for some increases that have already occurred. "Many of these nations owe massive amounts of money from past years, and not paying in those past years", Trump told the leaders of member countries.

In another tweet, the Republican president complained about Europe's trade surplus with the United States.

"Today, Europeans (collectively) spend on defence many times more than Russian Federation, and as much as China". Of course, USA military power is huge, and even 1% of GDP would make it the most potent force in Europe.

Trump has ramped up his rhetoric ahead of the talks - including in two separate tirades on Twitter on Monday and Tuesday - making the summit one of the most hard in years for the military alliance that has underpinned European security since World War II. It's too late to do anything about those facts.

European officials have expressed hopes that member states can paper over their differences, but European Union President Donald Tusk delivered a blunt message to the USA leader on Tuesday, urging hm to change his attitude. It would also have to be fully backed by Congress and the U.S. private and non-governmental sectors across the board.

It had previously been reported that Mr Trump had grown frustrated with Theresa May's "school mistress" tone. But Nato needs a collective defence provision when dealing with them.

Gary Neville's World Cup predictions are very impressive in hindsight
But they like a lot of their. "They are really good at set-pieces and their tall players are unsafe at corners. England have no real weakness".

On Nato, President Trump's main objection is that a number of member states have not increased their defence budgets to the target of 2% of economic output.

Trump can no more change those facts than he could repeal the law of gravity.

Ahead the NATO Heads of State and Government summit scheduled from 11 to 12 July, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium, leaders face a major threat to the credibility of their military alliance at their summit this week - not from traditional foe Russian Federation, but from the head of their most powerful member, USA president Donald Trump.

He told Mr. Putin that Russian Federation and the United States should get along better.

"I would like to address president Trump directly who for a long time now has been criticising Europe nearly daily", the former Polish prime minister said.

"The U.S.is spending many times more than any other country in order to protect them". Only Trump's ratifying this U.S. commitment will get the Russian leader's full attention and reduce any belief Putin may have that he can manipulate Trump to betray Western interests.

During a rally last week in Montana, Trump vowed that he would "tell NATO: 'You've got to start paying your bills."' The president also bemoaned that Americans were "the schmucks that are paying for the whole thing".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation says its military budget for 2018 is €1.325 billion (or about $1.55 billion). At Brussels, that means trying to minimize uncertainties generated by Trump's untamed rhetoric and quixotic behavior.

"This administration seems to treat our allies as adversaries, and treat our adversaries, or potential adversaries, like their friends", Warner said to CNN on Monday.
