Boris Johnson resigns as foreign secretary

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has lost two of her key cabinet ministers - as disagreements over the best strategy for leaving the European Union threaten to tear her ruling Conservative Party-government apart. The mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations. "And it is still very far from being solved".

May defended her Brexit plan to lawmakers in the House of Commons on Monday, with Johnson absent from his usual place on the Conservative front bench. May replaced Davis with Dominic Raab, a strong Brexit supporter. His appointment means that all four of the U.K.'s so-called great offices of state - Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary - are held by politicians who voted "Remain" in the 2016 referendum.

The plan is to be detailed in a white paper, which is expected to be published on Thursday.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mrs May should make way for a Labour administration if her Government can not get its act together quickly.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appeared to be revelling in the chaos at Westminster.

Tusk said it was unfortunate that the whole "idea of Brexit has not left together with David Davis".

Two senior sources confirmed Mr Davis' departure from the Cabinet. "But so many times since this Brexit process began, we've had to ask ourselves: will she stay or will she go?"

The EU official, however, said that United Kingdom politicians take a "huge risk" if they enter a deep political crisis at home.

He added that he would not run for the leadership of the Conservative Party in the future. May could survive a leadership challenge if Johnson or Davis decide to try to unseat her. Over the last few months they have shown how many friends this country has around the world, as 28 governments expelled Russian spies in an unprecedented protest at the attempted assassination of the Skripals.

May signalled that, after finally nailing her colours to a vision for Brexit, she had made a decision to face down the dissenters, who do not form a majority in parliament.

Rebuffing claims that her proposals make too many concessions to the EU, May said "this is the right Brexit" and would leave Britain free to make its own laws and trade deals.

Detailed talks were held between Number 10 and MPs on Saturday in a bid to reassure backbenchers over the Government's plans for Britain's future relationship with the European Union, while further meetings took place on Sunday and Monday lunchtime. That's the essential problem.
