Timehoprevealed that its security was breached and that the data of 21 million users was compromised. Roughly 4.7 million of the accounts had phone numbers connected to them which were also compromised.
Timehop, a mobile app that surfaces old social media posts from the same day but from previous years, has announced a security breach affecting its entire userbase of over 21 million users. The hack could have been much worse had Timehop not detected it as quickly as it did.
Neither Timehop nor Facebook immediately responded to requests for comment. "In general, Timehop only has access to social media posts you post yourself to your profile", it adds. We have deactivated these keys so they can no longer be used by anyone - so you'll have to re-authenticate to our App.
"No private/direct messages, financial data, or social media or photo content, or Timehop data including streaks were affected", the firm added.
"We have now taken steps that include multifactor authentication to secure our authorization and access controls on all accounts", the company said, noting that this applied to all accounts, not just in those in their cloud environment.
Even though the company refers repeatedly to 4 July 2018 in its breach notification, it has also published a more detailed analysis in which it admits that the crooks first got on 19 December 2017 (for three days), and then came back briefly in both March 2018 and June 2018 before the Fourth of July 2018 attack, when data is known to have been stolen. So evidently there was more than one vulnerable account for attackers to target.
The company said it now secured all accounts with multi-factor authentication to prevent further intrusions., and is putting other security measures in place.
For now, by way of explanation, it writes: "There is no such thing as flawless when it comes to cyber security but we are committed to protecting user data". Which does have a distinct "stable door being locked after the horse has bolted" feel to it.
Also not entirely clear from Timehop's blog post: When/if affected users were notified their information has been breached.
Review any apps that have access to accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Photos, and so forth.
We've reached out to the company with questions and will update this post with any response.
If you're a Timehop user and you want the app to keep on working, you'll have to reconnect it to the various services of your choice. We learned of the breach while it was still in progress, and were able to interrupt it, but data was taken. "My hopes are that with the new privacy regulations, such as GDPR, companies will take better care of PII and such incidents will become less common".
The stolen data comprised mostly of user names and email addresses.
Timehop users who are anxious the network intrusion and data breach might have impact their "Streak" - aka the number Timehop displays to denote how many consecutive days they have opened the app - are being reassured by the company that "we will ensure all Streaks remain unaffected by this event".
