Starbucks is eliminating plastic straws from all stores

Ottawa restaurants and big chains like Starbucks go straw free

The coffee giant announced Monday it will begin to phase out plastic straws from all of its stores, with a plan to scrap them completely by 2020.

The decision came after the company worked to design a new lid for the Draft Nitro cold foam beverage in 2016 that was originally served only in Seattle, according to a release from Starbucks. McDonald's shareholders voted down a proposal requesting a report on plastic straws in May, although it recently said it would switch to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and test alternatives to plastic straws in some US locations.

The exception to the new lid will be the Frappuccino, which will be served with a paper or compostable straw.

Starbucks said Monday that it is making available a strawless lid at 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada for certain drinks.

Starbucks will start rolling out strawless lids for all drinks in the fall. Unlike straws, the new lid can be recycled, the company said. Similar proposals are being considered in places like NY and San Francisco.

Starbucks customers use more than one billion straws per year.

Last month, McDonald's announced that it would start testing plastic-straw alternatives at certain US locations later this year. In May, the European Union also suggested a ban on some plastic items, including straws.

A number of local governments have recently passed legislation restricting the use and distribution of plastic straws.

"With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines", said Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program in a statement.
