Squawking unsteadily… seagulls drunk on beach

How the seagulls got drunk is unknown, but one theory suggests they could have got stuck into some alcohol that was left on a beach.

Inspector Jo Daniel says "At first, the birds look like they have botulism (an illness caused by bacteria) but then, after vomiting, most seem to recover".

In one of the centers in the West under the Hatch Taunton, Somerset, for two weeks, found nearly 30 birds drunk, smelling of alcohol, reports the Chronicle.info with reference on Voice. RSPCA vet David Couper told BBC that the birds were losing their balance "just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink".

Tracking down the source is proving hard but local breweries and distilleries after being urged to check the leftovers from their production process and ensure it can not be accessed by birds and wildlife. RSPCA have had dozens of such cases from the south coast.

One bird was rescued in Lyme Regis, Dorset, after drinking alcohol left on a beach.

The vet said: "Sadly, a few of the birds have died but majority have made good recoveries and have been released after a few days in our care".

The RSPCA have said they have treated a number of birds in recent weeks and they have even obtained some footage displaying the birds erratic behaviour. It advised vets coming across gulls with beer symptoms to give them a chance to sleep it off. Animal welfare experts, think that the birds' inebriated state may be the result of feeding on brewery waste.

Anyone who has any concerns for the welfare of a bird or any animal can contact the RSPCA's 24-hour helpline on 0300 1234 999.
