Boris Johnson quits to add to pressure on May over Brexit

In a blow to the beleaguered prime minister, Davis told May in a letter that the government's proposals for close trade and customs ties "will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one".

Friday's agreement, which came after marathon talks at the prime minister's country retreat, would "make the supposed control by Parliament illusory rather than real", he added.

The junior Brexit minister, Steve Baker, also resigned, Downing Street confirmed Monday.

He said he was "unpersuaded" that the government's negotiating approach "will not just lead to further demands for concessions" from Brussels. I take my hat off to you.

In his letter, Mr Davis told Mrs May that "the current trend of policy and tactics" was making it "look less and less likely" that the United Kingdom would leave the customs union and single market.

After a day when the foreign secretary cancelled meetings for crisis talks at his official residence in central London, Johnson made a decision to walk from his job - just hours after May's Brexit minister David Davis did the same in protest at her plans.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has repeatedly called for reversing Brexit, echoing other critics such as French President Emmanuel Macron and billionaire investor George Soros, who have suggested that Britain could still change its mind.

After the hours-long meeting at Chequers, May seemed to have persuaded the most vocal Brexit campaigners in the cabinet, including Davis, to back her plan to press for "a free trade area for goods" with the European Union and maintain close trade ties. His replacement will be announced shortly.

Mickelson has openly said that the two probably should have always gotten along this well, but they've "turned the corner". According to Golf .com's Alan Shipnuck, the idea started at this year's Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

But leading pro-Brexit legislator Jacob Rees-Mogg said, "I don't think a no-confidence vote is immediately in the offing". "If the Brexit Secretary can not support them they can not be very good proposals".

Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition Labour Party, said the resignation was proof that May "has no authority left and is incapable of delivering Brexit".

It is unclear whether Brussels will accept this, after repeatedly warning Britain it can not "cherry-pick" bits of its single market.

Ministers agreed to pursue a soft Brexit plan at the meeting, even though Boris Johnson described May's Brexit proposals as "polishing a turd". There are now only two ministers remaining in the Department for Exiting the European Union.

David Davis said he "wouldn't have done a good job" of delivering May's Brexit plan, with Tory MP Marcus Fysh saying the plan is paramount to breaking manifesto pledges, which "has consequences".

He also served as a reservist in the SAS, the British army's elite special force unit, before entering politics and being elected to parliament in 1987.

When the Conservatives returned to power in 2010, he never got a government post and spent his time on the backbenches campaigning on civil liberties issues.
