Xfinity Mobile to start throttling video resolution and mobile hotspot speeds

Comcast Xfinity Mobile

While the video streaming change applies to all Xfinity Mobile subscribers, the slower hotspot speeds are only going into effect for those on the unlimited plan. First, it will start holding back video quality to 480p for both its pay per GB and unlimited plans.

As it now stands, videos you stream using your Xfinity Mobile data are presented in 720p HD. Some of Verizon's and AT&T's unlimited plans include resolution throttling to 480p. The speeds will be capped at 600kbps when the cellular data is shared with other devices and there's no way to upgrade the speed on this plan.

For Unlimited customers: hotspot data will be limited to 600kbps and all cellular usage will be subject to limits of 1.5Mbps download/750kbps upload beyond 20GB used in a cycle.

Here's how British newspapers celebrated England's 'historic' win over Colombia
England finally ended their penalties curse when they beat Colombia 4-3 in a shootout, completing a nerve-wracking 120 minutes. Under Roy Hodgson, the team got out of their group but came up short in a quarter-final against Italy in Kiev.

One Comcast customer forwarded the email to Ars, and there's also a Reddit thread discussing the email. Later this year, however, it will charge for 720p streaming, and it reportedly does not have plans to allow 1080p streaming or higher over cellular. If you pay for data by the gigabyte, you'll still get full-speed tethering-but you're charged $12 per gig, so that could quickly add up if you're streaming high-quality video over your hotspot connection.

Xfinity Mobile from Comcast launched past year, and now the wireless operator is making some big changes. However, Xfinity Mobile announced it is "setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online".

Comcast says that these changes are being put in place to "help" users stay under their data limits. Previously, Xfinity Mobile customers had access to 4G hotspots and 720p video resolution. This can help you save money if you pay By the Gig and take longer to reach the 20 GB threshold if you have the Unlimited data option. At this speed, you'll conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20 GB threshold but you'll still be able to do numerous online activities you enjoy. Xfinity Mobile users can get 4G hotspot speeds by switching to Comcast's "By the Gig" pricing.
