The drone was harmless, but showed the lack of security at the facility, the group said.

Global environmentalist group, Greenpeace, intentionally crashed a Superman-shaped drone into a French nuclear power plant Tuesday, in order to point out some security flaws and the site's general vulnerability to outside, aerial attacks.

In this photo released by Greenpeace, a drone resembling the character Superman crashes into a wall of the nuclear power plant of Le Bugey, central, France, Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

"This action again highlights the extreme vulnerability of this type of buildings, which contain the highest amount of radioactivity in nuclear plants", Greenpeace said.

It said the drone struck a storage pool for spent nuclear fuel next to a reactor, one of the most radioactive areas at the site. They targeted the center's spent-fuel swimming pool structure, which could hold the matching of a number of activator cores in concrete swimming pools outside the very enhanced activator structure.

"After entering the zone, forbidden for flights, our activists voluntarily threw it against the wall of the pool building for spent fuel..."

EDF reported that two drones had flown over the Bugey site during the incident, with one successfully intercepted by French police.

Greenpeace has gone after France's nuclear security before in previous stunts.

EDF said it would file a police complaint against Greenpeace, Reuters reported.

In October past year, Greenpeace activists breached security and launched fireworks over EDF's Cattenom nuclear plant.

Back in October Greenpeace activists broke in and managed to launch fireworks over EDF's Cattenom nuclear plant, despite security barriers.

Greenpeace's security breaches have sparked a parliament investigation into nuclear security, which is due to present its report on Thursday. In February, a French court gave several Greenpeace activists suspended jail sentences while ordering the group to pay a fine and €50,000 in damages to EDF.
