Anirban Lahiri bounces back at Quicken Loans National

Tiger Woods struggles to keep successful round together Saturday at the Quicken Loans National tournament. More

Francesco Molinari cruised to an eight-shot win at the Quicken Loans National after firing an impressive 62 on Sunday. Molinari also is going for his first official PGA Tour victory, though he won a World Golf Championship in Shanghai in 2010, which then was not recognized by the PGA Tour. The course has no par 5s on the front nine, but there are two on the back nine.

The 35-year-old eagled the 10th hole and followed with four consecutive birdies as a magical 59 appeared in sight. And with a birdie on the final hole for a 67, he tied for sixth to earn his first trip to the British Open.

Although he had never won in the United States, Molinari has five career wins on the European Tour.

On the upside as he starts preparing for the Open Championship in a fortnight's time, Woods tied for fourth - his best result since a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship three months ago. Woods had a roller third round, but he kept himself in contention for the tournament with a 68, putting him inside the top 10 entering Sunday. "The putting is definitely improved and that's taken pressure off the long game as well because if you know you can make 20, 30 footers, you're not trying too hard to leave it close to the flag".

Tiger Woods looked as though he would be right there with them. He was in position to get closer until he missed a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 10, overcooked a simple chip at No. 11 that ran off the green onto the fringe, missed the fairway at No. 13 with an iron and then hit a 3-wood just over the green on the par-4 14th, chipping to 3 feet and missing the putt.

His plan, starting the day tied for the lead with Mexican Abraham Ancer, was to attack and he can consider his approach as a mission accomplished. He finished 10 shots behind Molinari, but still feels like he accomplished something this week.

Former world number one Tiger Woods notched four successive birdies on the front nine en route to a 68 that left him six shots behind.

The 14th is a drivable par-4, and Woods hit the green both days, only to see the ball bound over.

"Well, I think the last two days playing [holes] 13, 14 the way I did". So I'm seeing the lines again, I'm rolling the ball on my line, I've got the speed, and I really like the swing of this putter.

"I told him it was the pasta", Molinari said.

"I grew up in Mexico, in the north part of Mexico where it's very hot", he said. "I played great on the back nine, the start was incredible".

CBS Sports will be with you the entire way Sunday updating this story with the latest scores, analysis and highlights - particularly while Woods is on the course. Three birdies later, he was nine shots clear and on his way to victory in the Quicken Loans National.

American Ryan Armour was second on 267, one stroke ahead of South Korea's Kang Sung with Woods next on 269, one ahead of Americans Bronson Burgoon and Beau Hossler. Meanwhile, Woods shot a 65 as well to move up to a tie for 11th place, four shots behind the leaders.
