'Extreme, dangerous' heat to continue this week, meteorologists say

The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, while an Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect from Monday evening through Monday evening.

"Heat and humidity continues through this week, driving heat index values at or above 95 degrees through at least Thursday", the advisory said.

The pollutant of concern is "ground level ozone concentrations" and "fine particles", according to AccuWeather.

A heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures will occur and cautions people against participating in strenuous outdoor activity - especially during midday hours - and to drink plenty of water.

As New York City makes its way through the first heat wave of the season, Americans can expect slightly lower temps as they celebrate Independence Day on Wednesday. Mostly sunny start, the clouds increase with pop-up storm chances.
