A bug unblocked more than 800,000 Facebook and Messenger users

A Facebook bug quietly unblocked people that 800,000 of its users had previously blocked

However, the previously blocked person could add as a friend or even contact on Messenger. As a result, over 800,000 users were subjected to at least one of the person on their blocked list being temporarily unblocked. Those who were unblocked could not see content that a user shared with their friends, but they could see "things posted to a wider audience", Facebook said, such as photos shared with friends of friends. Users who severed friendships with people they blocked did not see those friendships reinstated, she added.

When you block someone on Facebook they can not see things you post on your profile, start conversations with you on Messenger or add you as a friend.

"We know that the ability to block someone is important - and we'd like to apologise".

In its original statement, Facebook pointed out why someone might want to block another user. Blocking also automatically unfriends them if you were previously friends.

It's not on the scale of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but Facebook once again has egg on its face thanks to a privacy problem.

In its defense, Facebook says that the vast majority of people affected by the bug - some 83 percent - "had only one person they had blocked temporarily unblocked". Personal and sensitive data of users was scraped by the analytics company which was allegedly used for Trump campaign for the USA presidential polls 2016, among others.
