Israel responds to explosive kites with Gaza strikes

An explosion is seen in Gaza City after an airstrike by Israel

Israeli Air Force jets have carried out a series of strikes on Gaza, reportedly destroying several Hamas military targets in retaliation to alleged arson attempts and "explosive kites and balloons" being launched at Israel.

Robert Mardini, the regional director for the Middle East at the ICRC, further said at a press conference on Monday that the "vast majority" of more than 13,000 hospitalized demonstrators had suffered severe injuries, including multiple gunshot wounds, Press TV reported.

The IDF said one rocket fired into Gaza struck a vehicle belonging to a group that launched the balloons into Israel. Most of the casualties have been unarmed, drawing heavy worldwide criticism of Israel's open-fire orders.

On Monday, CNN witnessed charred fields, blackened trees and remnants of kites in Kissufim, on the Israeli side of the fence with Gaza. "They are meant to kill and inflict damage".

At least 125 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops during mass demonstrations along the Gaza border since March 30 and the men sending the kites over the fence believe they have found an effective new weapon.

The demonstration was organized by a group called "Movement for lifting sanctions imposed on Gaza", a large movement of academics, journalists, writers, artists, prisoners, activists and citizens who made a decision to break the silence towards the measures imposed by the Palestinian Authority on the Gaza Strip since March 2017, in addition to ending the Palestinian division and achieving reconciliation.

The group also accused Israel of justifying its use of excessive force against Palestinian activists.

The protest called for the end of the division between the two major Palestinian parties, Hamas and Fatah, calling for a national unity.
