Multi-state salmonella outbreak tracked to Honey Smacks cereal

It started in early March.

The Kellogg Company has since recalled 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of Honey Smacks cereal.

An outbreak of salmonella that has infected 73 people in 31 states has led investigators to a suspected culprit: certain batches of Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal.

There have been no deaths reported so far.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says more than 70 people have gotten sick in 31 states. People should throw away the recalled cereal and contact Kellogg's to get a full refund, the company said.

More common is fresh foods, which is the case for the multi-state infections the CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have tracked to pre-cut fruit at an Indianapolis plant run by Caito Foods.

Alonso's victory completes the second part of motorsport's "triple crown" for the two-time Formula 1 world champion. A Toyota victory had been widely predicted after last year's champions Porsche withdrew from the 2018 edition.

Announcing the recall, Kellogg pointed out that it does not actually make the cereal.

The FDA says that the recalled products were distributed across the US and were also sold in Guam, Saipan, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean and Tahiti.

NY has recorded the highest number of outbreak cases (7), followed by California, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania (5 each). Outside of the United States, the cereal was distributed in Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, the Bahamas, Barbados, Tortola, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, and Tahiti.

Salmonella usually causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other places in the body. Most people recover in four to seven days. High-risk people include children younger than 5 years, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems.
