Why Julen Lopetegui was appointed — Real Madrid

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed he had the chance to become Zinedine Zidane's successor at Real Madrid but turned down the offer to stay in Turin. Speaking from his retreat in Livorno, the Italian coach revealed to Sky Sport that he was approached by Madrid but declined their offer, explained that his commitments with Juve prevent him from working elsewhere: "More than turning Madrid down, it was a question of saying yes to Juventus".

Allegri affirmed that he rejected the interest from Madrid out of respect for his current club: "I told [Perez] that I had given my word to Juventus that I would stay here and I wanted to respect what I had said".

The report now says that both players are "waiting for the call" from Real Madrid as they look to resolve their futures in the coming weeks and months.

"I am grateful to president Florentino Perez for taking me into consideration".

Earlier this summer, Allegri was also linked with positions at Arsenal and Chelsea.

"At the moment, Juve are one of the best clubs in the world".

As for winning the Champions League, Juventus' main obsession, he added: "In the last 11 seasons we have beaten Madrid four times and Barça four times".
