Vivo NEX announced with pop-up camera and in-display fingerprint sensor

Vivo NEX S and NEX A announced Price specifications features and

TechRadar is now in China at the launch of the new Vivo phone, so we'll be testing out the phone as soon as possible to give you our verdict on this next-generation device. As the name itself suggests, the Vivo Nex is a standard mid-range smartphone and the Nex Ultimate is a flagship smartphone, but both the devices differ only in terms of the chipset and RAM, storage options.

To do away with all the things that typically need to be on a smartphone's front side, Vivo implemented several daring technological solutions.

"The launch of NEX finally brings an end to the industry's pursuit of a true bezel-less device". One teaser even suggested it'll have a 95% or more ratio but we'll have to wait and see if Vivo can be beaten by this new device. The NEX also features a third-generation in-display fingerprint sensor, with the brand stating that the new sensor is 50% better at recognition accuracy with a broader detection area and 10% faster unlock speed. Vivo says that the transition is "instant", and that probably means that it takes the "Elevating Camera" less than a second to get into position for shooting.

Both the phones come with identical innards like 6.59-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 19.3:9, dual-SIM support, run on Funtouch OS 4.0 based on Android Oreo.

While the front of the phone gets all the attention, the back isn't all that bad either. 12-megapixel (f/1.8 aperture, 4-axis OIS, Dual Pixel sensor) and 5-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) cameras are included on the back of the phone, while a single 8-megapixel "Elevating Camera" serves as the phone's front-facing camera.

The speaker has been replaced by a vibrating glass mechanism called "screen soundcasting technology". That fingerprint scanner is not visible on the phone's body, as it is placed underneath the phone's display.

Form and function can not be separated and in the ultimate bezel-less phone, the performance also needs to be optimal.

The quest for coming up with the ultimate bezel-less device has bore tons of fruit already. Vivo NEX also features its own AI-powered smart assistant called Jovi. The smartphone makes a sound when the selfie camera rises and hides. The dual camera system of the Vivo NEX is equipped with AI capabilities for scene identification, HDR, filters and photo composition.

The entry-level Nex A is priced at US$610. Users can have Jovi open apps or identify objects on the phone screen, using either voice commands or a dedicated hardware button on the phone's side. We've been looking forward to a 100% screen-to-body ratio but we know it's impossible to achieve at this point.

Internationally, the Vivo NEX featuring Snapdragon 710 SoC is known as Vivo NEX A. The 128 GB and 256 GB NEX Ultimate variants are internationally known as Vivo NEX and Vivo NEX S.
