US, Mexico, Canada embark on World Cup history with winning bid

The United bid by Canada Mexico and the United States was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The FIFA congress announced Wednesday it had selected Canada, the United States and Mexico to host the tournament.

But because the city has yet to be confirmed as an official Canadian host, a venue can not be finalized.

If Kansas City is chosen, matches would be played at Arrowhead Stadium.

Vancouver had an opportunity to join Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton as a potential host, but the united North American bid committee was forced to move forward without the West Coast city in March after failing to reach a deal over the cost of the tournament.

The four bidding nations were ineligible from voting, while Ghana were not in attendance.

"You look at the assets we've got in England, or the United Kingdom, in terms of grounds: some of the best grounds in world football, the best training grounds".

US soccer fans cheer.

Soccer fans are invited to celebrate the big announcement with a beer on Sporting KC, No Other Pub and Anheuser-Busch from 5:30-6:30 p.m.at No Other Pub in the Power and Light District.

The 2026 World Cup will be played in North America
The English Football Association revealed it had voted for the United 2026 bid in a statement. Here's what you need to know and what we're still waiting to find out.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote.

This was the first World Cup vote since 2010, when United States and Switzerland investigators unveiled corruption on an unprecedented scale afterwards.

President Donald Trump welcomed the news, tweeting: "The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup".

The US hosted the World Cup in 1994, while the tournament was held twice in Mexico (1970 and 1986).

A successful North American bid would likely also give the Canadian national team an automatic berth into the 2026 tournament.

"The world is getting better, so we have to get better too", acknowledges Sean Fleming, who coaches the under-16 group at FC Edmonton.

There will be 16 host cities split between the USA (10), Canada (three), and Mexico (three). In 2002, Japan and South Korea both were granted automatic bids when they co-hosted the World Cup. After controversy surrounded the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russian Federation and the 2022 finals in Qatar, the vote was the first to be decided by the FIFA congress. Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup. However, Shanks expects soccer's popularity to continue to grow in the US within the next eight years.

US president Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations, in between tweets on OPEC oil prices and how cutting military exercises in South Korea will "save a fortune".
