The actor was in Toronto Monday for the groundbreaking of the Canadian Nobu restaurant, which he was launching alongside celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa. At April's Untold Stories Program, which coincides with the TriBeCa Film Festival, De Niro made another run at Trump. "It's a disgrace, and I apologize to [Canadian Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau, too, and the other people at the G-7". Trump called Trudeau "dishonest" and "weak" following the summit on Saturday.

Echoing Trump's sentiments, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro also spoke harshly about Trudeau on Fox News over the weekend. Shortly, after the election, still not a Trump fan, De Niro conceded to the Daily News that that he wouldn't say that about a sitting president.

In a press conference, Trudeau called US steel and aluminum tariffs unjust and promised retaliatory tariffs.

A noted liberal, he has been critical of President Trump, a Republican, at other show business events, but none with the high profile and reach of the Tony Awards, which salute performances in Broadway theater.

"Sir, with regard to the comments in the news today, I have only two words to say: Thank you", Tory said.

The remarks from American officials prompted a former USA ambassador to Canada to call for an apology, saying both Trudeau and the Canadian people were being subjected to "insulting and inappropriate remarks".

He applauded De Niro.

Kathy Griffin shared a pic of her and one of De Niro, writing: 'The F**k Trump Club'.

"So when De Niro finally got the call to see Springsteen play live, he said 'yes without asking any questions".

"This guy just is a jerk", he said.
