Rafael Nadal admits he thought he would have retired by now

Nadal now has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name, leaving him just three short of Roger Federer's all-time record in the men's game. Of course, I have ambition, of course. Nadal said. "Yes, is true that in my career, I achieved much more than what I ever dreamed".

He also won Wimbledon for a second time in 2010 before claiming his first U.S. Open title, becoming the seventh man to win all four Grand Slams.

The No. 7-seeded Thiem was trying to become only the second player from Austria to earn a Grand Slam title; Thomas Muster won the 1995 French Open.

The focus will now turn to the grass courts of Wimbledon, where defending champion Roger Federer is expected to return to action after electing to skip the clay-court campaign.

"I have never been insane about this kind of stuff", said Nadal.

"I would love to be playing in as many places as possible, but you understand I need to check how I feel in the next couple of days", Nadal said. You have to do your way.

Australian tennis great Ken Rosewall has celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Roland Garros triumph with the honour of presenting Rafael Nadal with his 11th Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy.

During the two week Grand Slam, Nadal had to call on the elements to survive the dogged resistance of Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinal in which he dropped his first set of the tournament.

He pulled out of planned appearances in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami before returning at the start of April for Spain's Davis Cup tie against Germany. Whether it was at the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo, Madrid, or Rome-whether it was his home tournament in Barcelona-Nadal nearly never lost on the Spaniard. "Because normally in the 5-4, if I could put the balls inside and make adequate decisions, it was a very good opportunity for me".

The next few games were an absolute treat for fans of clay court tennis.

The number of Grand Slam finals now contested by Nadal, extending his position at second on the men's Open Era leaderboard, behind Federer (30) and ahead of Djokovic (21) and Lendl (19). The 24-year-old was beaten by Halep in the semi-finals of the French Open.

Despite wracking up one title after another in Paris, it clearly still means plenty to the world No. 1.

"Of course it's going to be easier, a little bit, because it's not going to be the first time anymore".

Nadal is now coached by former French Open champion Carlos Moya.

It was clay-court tennis as usual at Roland Garros on Sunday, as the Spaniard won his 11th French Open singles title.

"Honestly, I never expected that one day I would play the finals here so I am still really happy". Now, six Slams later, Federer still keeps his lead at three. For Rafael Nadal, winning one eleven times is his reality.

Ex-Real Madrid and Portugal footballer Luis Figo: Congratulations!

The Spaniard continued his extraordinary domination at Roland Garros with a ruthless 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory. For a time, fans could nearly believe that Thiem would present a challenge in this match. Amazing! What a machine!
