Musk's Boring Company to build high-speed system in Chicago

The Boring Company headed by Elon Musk wants to get you from downtown Chicago to the airport in 12 minutes

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will announce Thursday morning that Elon Musk's The Boring Company has won its bid to build and operate a high speed rail express service to O'Hare International Airport. That said, with his other companies, Musk has "been able to pursue and fulfill visions that others say are too hard", Mahmassani added.

The plan is a risk, Musk's tunneling technology remains unproven. The plan comes in response to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's request previous year for proposals to build and operate a high-speed rail line that will whisk passengers from the airport to downtown in 20 minutes or less.

The Boring Company has released details about its proposed system already-it calls the system a "Loop" as in a modified version of the "Hyperloop" idea.

The system will transport passengers from the Loop to O'Hare International Airport - one of the world's businest. (This means there will be a Loop to The Loop-very cute, Chicago.) Unlike the Hyperloop idea, the tunnels will not be depressurized. The company has stated that its electric pods would travel at 125-150 miles per hour.

The Boring Company was among four bidders vying for the project, which would be privately funded if the company and the city reach a final deal.

Skates will leave each station as frequently as every 30 seconds, operating 20 hours per day, seven days a week.

The company beat out a consortium that included Mott MacDonald, the civil engineering firm that designed a terminal at London's Heathrow Airport, and JLC Infrastructure, an infrastructure fund backed by former basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson, said the people, who declined to be identified because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. The contract will also include protections to ensure taxpayers would be protected against any costs incurred by an incomplete project. It'll be called The Chicago Express Loop.

If all goes well in the contract-negotiation process, The Boring Company's selection by the city of Chicago is the most significant stepping stone for the company to date. It received permits to start digging in Washington, DC, and in Los Angeles.

Boring's effort to win fast-track city approval of a 2.7-mile-long tunnel beneath a busy stretch of Los Angeles' West Side has drawn a court challenge from two neighborhood organizations.
