Justice minister quits ahead of crunch Brexit votes

Prime Minister Theresa May

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a showdown in parliament with lawmakers later on Tuesday who want a "meaningful vote" on an eventual Brexit deal and to set the government's "direction" if the house rejects the agreement.

Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, May said the government could never allow the hands of the government to be tied in the negotiations or allow the Brexit decision to be reversed.

By 324 votes to 298, MPs on Tuesday rejected an amendment by the House of Lords that would have guaranteed lawmakers a meaningful vote on a Brexit deal. But for those millions of former Remainer voters holding out for a hero until the end of the night, it's still unclear if rebel leader Dominic Grieve will fit the bill.

Following a meeting with May, the conservative MPs said they had been promised input into the terms of a new Brexit deal if the first is rejected, while one minister said he would only commit to further discussions. But she managed to avert defeat, by brokering a last minute deal that staved off a rebellion from within her own Conservative party.

Following days of frantic lobbying by Conservative officials, May renewed appeals for unity over the "meaningful vote", after the government appeared to have secured a compromise to stop a similar rebellion on Wednesday over Britain's trading ties with the EU. As ever, Delano will keep you posted. She tore into the deep division and animosity which she warned is tearing her party, and the country, apart. Theresa May has said no British government would ever agree to a hard border there.

Asked if she would seek a delay to the June European Council while the Government decides its position, Mrs May said it is not a summit about the Brexit talks but will include many issues such as sanctions against Russian Federation.

A victory for the "meaningful final vote" amendment would leave the government weaker in am upcoming round of talks with European Union negotiators in late June, and also weaken Theresa May's authority as leader.

Earlier, Mrs May was hit by the resignation of justice minister Phillip Lee, who quit the Government live on stage during a speech in London in order to be able to back Mr Grieve's amendment. For others, it was only a commitment to continue to discuss the issue as the new amendment agreed by the commons goes back to the lords.

The Lords amendment would have given parliament the power to decide what happened next, with the possibility of going back to the negotiating table or even staying in the bloc. These kinds of promises by the government are fundamental to the way in which parliament and the government work together to craft legislation that the majority of MPs can live with.

The House of Commons voted by a wide margin against a call to join the European Economic Area - a club that includes the EU nations and Norway - after Conservative and opposition Labour leaderships opposed it.

She told the Commons: "The central choice for Parliament is whenever we accept the outcome of the referendum or do we seek to subvert that process?" But it was forced to offer Tory rebels some big concessions.

If the government avoids defeat, is Brexit a done deal?

It also imperils the now invisible border between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, an European Union member.
