Immigrant separated from family killed himself in cell despite camera, checks

Laredo Border Patrol agents made the discovery while patrolling US Highway 59 located just miles away from the Mexican border

On May 13, the Starr County Sheriff's Office notified CBP that Munoz was found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead of an apparent suicide. Officers booked Muñoz at almost 10:00 p.m. on May 12 and reportedly checked on the man every 30 minutes.

Video footage shows Munoz using a sweater to strangle himself. The report doesn't say what time that occurred and the sheriff's office didn't respond to requests for comment Sunday.

The Washington Post, which first reported the death, said that Muñoz, 39, was a Honduran father who suffered a breakdown after he was separated from his wife and 3-year-old son.

The sheriff's report, like a CBP news release on Saturday, made no mention of details in the newspaper's story about why Munoz might have been so despondent.

"We've worked with parents who have shared suicidal thoughts and who have attempted to take their own lives because of the experience of detention", Mr. Tullius said. As the president was leaving the G7 summit, he said he would be open to a bill. The administration made clear that while there is no single law mandating that children be separated from their parents at the border, that is often the result when a guardian becomes incarcerated.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief Thomas Homan defended family separation when speaking to the United Nations last week stating that while "it's sad to see children cry when you take a parent out of a home" it "doesn't mean that we ignore the law". It said he was sent to the Starr County jail after becoming "disruptive and combative".
