HAIM part ways with booking agent following gender pay gap dispute

HAIM Sack Agent After Being Paid 10 Times Less Than A Male Festival Act

Sister trio Haim take the issue of gender pay disparity to heart, recounting a firsthand incident with a former booking agent whom they fired after discovering that they had been paid significantly less than a male artist they shared the bill with. "It's so hard to check: everything's so secretive about how much people are getting paid, and that's bullshit", Danielle said.

'We didn't think twice about it, but we later found out that someone was getting paid 10 times more than us.

This was after Este Haim had said, "It's scary out there and [messed] up not even to be paid half the same amount". But to be paid a 10th of that amount of money?

They didn't wrangle with festival coordinators or demand more, believing the deal to be a beneficial promotional opportunity.

As the band explained in a recent interview with Grazia (via NME), they were encouraged to play at an unnamed festival for a low fee under the expectation that their performance would lead to subsequent radio play. But they were paid 10 times less, which prompted them to fire their agent over the discrepancy.

Since the success of their 2013 album Days Are Gone, which reached number one in the United Kingdom album charts, the band have played festivals including Glastonbury and Coachella.

They told BBC Radio 1: "We do see women working in the studios but we want to see more".

"Women are rarely credited as the creative force behind popular music", Stacy L. Smith, author of the study and think tank leader, said at the time the research was released.

They also said some radio stations in the USA have so few women that their premises don't even have female bathrooms.
