USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ronaldo, pop star Robbie Williams on stage to kick off World Cup opening ceremony

Perhaps US President Donald Trump's tweet in April stating, "It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against against the U.S bid".

The congress was presided over by Fifa's head Gianni Infantino while it was opened by Russian president Vladimir Putin, who received a standing ovation from attendees at Moscow's Expocentre.

Cordeiro, who was elected USSF president in February, said he anticipates those guidelines will remain in place in 2026.

In a vote of more than 200 member nations of soccer's governing body in Moscow, the so-called United Bid beat out Morocco, 134-65. Whereas previously the 24 members of the FIFA Executive Committee used to determine World Cup races, the host is now decided by a vote of individual FIFA member nations.

"The U.S. together with Mexico and Canada just got the World Cup. Congratulations - a great deal of hard work!"

Pena Nieto posted a video to his Twitter feed in which he said: "Football knows that Canada, the United States and Mexico are deeply united". In addition, the United bid projected to bring in $14 billion, double that of Morocco.

Bid leaders say 5.8m tickets sold could generate more than $2bn, while hospitality takings could be 150 per cent higher than the baseline figure anticipated for Russian Federation this summer. Hosting World Cups and Olympic Games is openly a politicians' prestige-burnishing project now, not only for Russia's president Vladimir Putin or Qatar's Emir, seeking soft power from hosting in 2022. The North African country would have needed to invest billions of dollars to build new stadiums while the United States, Mexico and Canada will mostly use existing venues. Canada, Mexico and the US are home to a combined 491 million people and two of the world's biggest media markets. The president has regularly assailed world leaders, including allies like Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron, for "ripping" America off over trade.

The plot will expand upon the classic story from the 1941 animated film about a circus elephant whose ears are so big he can fly. There, they bond with the circus's newest addition, a shy young elephant named Dumbo .

The four bidding nations were ineligible from voting, while Ghana were not in attendance.

Next, Fifa's evaluation task force raised serious doubts about Morocco's capacity to host the World Cup.

The three federation chiefs also spoke, with Cordeiro strongly emphasizing the profitability of a North American tournament, promising $11 billion in revenues. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup. Before the vote, some had suggested that a "Trump effect" was harming the United States' chances, saying the president's quarrels internationally were putting off some countries.

"Football is the only victor", US Soccer boss Carlos Cordeiro said, according to BBC.

"We believe this event will become a lightning rod". The U.S. team failed to qualify this year.

The 2026 finals will be the first expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, up from the current 32-team event. Mexico and Canada will each host 10 games, while America will get 60. For instance, Los Angeles may host the US opener, Dallas is mentioned as a candidate to host the semifinals, while the final match is expected to take place in Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside of New York City.
