United Kingdom justice minister resigns ahead of key Brexit debate

Her government is most vulnerable over an amendment, introduced by the upper house of parliament, to change the so-called "meaningful vote" on any final Brexit deal by handing the lower house more power to set the "direction" of the government if it rejects the agreement.

Facing the prospect of losing a vote on a crucial amendment to the government's flagship Brexit legislation - which was created to empower parliament to vote down the final deal without risking a "no-deal" exit from the bloc - ministers intervened with a concession at the 11th hour even as MPs were wrapping up debate on the controversial measure.

They subsequently warned they will not be easily bought off, while Tory Brexiteers urged ministers not to concede any ground.

She won a succession of votes on Tuesday overturning Lords amendments, including one which would have removed the date of Brexit on March 29 2019 from the text of the Bill.

Mr Grieve stated that further compromises on the amendment would be reached, and rebel MPs would be able to achieve satisfactory progress on the issue in the coming months.

The parts of his amendment which he expects to be taken forward by ministers provide a mechanism by which Parliament has to be consulted by the end of November in the event of no deal or if a proposed agreement is rejected, he said.

"We had a personal assurance that we would find a way of addressing the concerns which are encapsulated in these amendments", Mr Grieve said as voting continued on Tuesday. "I am sure a sensible amendment will be forthcoming which we can all agree to".

However, despite backing down, pro-Remain Tories signalled they would not be easily consoled by a compromise offered by ministers.

Her fellow Conservative backbencher Stephen Hammond said: "Parliament must be able to have its say in a "no deal" situation".

"In all conscience, I can not support the Government's decision to oppose this amendment because doing so breaches such fundamental principles of human rights and Parliamentary sovereignty".

In a day of drama, May's position seemed suddenly weaker when junior justice minister Phillip Lee, who has always been critical of Brexit strategy, resigned and said he would vote against the government.

"This justifies my decision to resign and makes it a lot less painful".

Well what the Remainer MPs thought they heard from May does not seem compatible with Davis's red lines.

"A meaningful vote is not the ability to reverse the decision of the referendum", Brexit Secretary David Davis told BBC radio.

Ms. May has said a government defeat would weaken its hand in exit talks with the European Union.

Dismissing claims that Mrs May had effectively abandoned her threat that the United Kingdom could leave the European Union without a deal, Mr Jenkin said: "There is only agreement for discussions, not concessions".

The main point of contention between those who want to keep the closest possible ties with the European Union and those who aim for a clean break is a demand to give parliament a "meaningful vote" on any agreement May negotiates with Brussels.

307 Conservative MPs backed the government, which is a strong result for Theresa May, who just hours earlier had feared she would lose her majority due to disgruntled Tory MPs.

LONDON - Theresa May has narrowly avoided a humiliating parliamentary defeat on Brexit after making a major concession to Conservative rebels which could hand MPs an effective veto on her Brexit deal.

"I've been through this before when in opposition and now that when we're in Government, because if the House makes the concession of allowing the dialogue to continue and I can see the merit of that happening, it has got to be done in good faith".
