Spanish port to accept 629 stranded migrants snubbed by Italy

The humanitarian ship Aquarius currently 43 nautical miles off Malta's coast carrying 629 migrants

Charity boats operating off the Libyan coast have played an increasingly important role in rescuing migrants, who often put to sea in flimsy inflatable boats not designed for the open ocean.

While Spain's willingness to take in the Aquarius has surprised many observers, for the new Spanish government "it does make political sense for several reasons" says the BBC's Guy Hedgecoe. The ship San Giusto then assisted the Aquarius teams in a final transfer of 119 shipwrecked people from Italian merchant ship MV Jolly Vanadio to the Aquarius.

But Italy can not simply expel hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants without severe repression, and Italy doesn't yet have the agreements with many key countries of origin needed to facilitate returns.

"Italian maritime authorities must organise for a safe and fast solution for the 629 people on board", SOS said late on Monday.

Sea Watch, a Germany based non-governmental organization that attempts to aid migrants journeying to Europe, issued a series of tweets saying its vessel was responding to the situation, which the organization said took place 20 miles off the coast of Libya.

The crisis came after Italy's new right-wing interior minister made good on a pledge to close the country's ports to non-governmental organisations that pick up migrants at sea.

Europe should recognize that Italy needs greater support to ensure a humane approach to migrants and to protect refugees, but also be willing to insist that Italy's government respect human rights.

Italy's refusal at the weekend marks the first major anti-migrant move since far-right interior minister Matteo Salvini took office this month promising to crack down on illegal immigration.

After two years at sea in which it has saved almost 30,000 migrants, the Aquarius rescue ship is charting a course for a head-on collision with European governments.

The Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the SOS Mediterranee operated-ship rescued migrants from rubber vessels and took some others from "Italian navy ships, Italian coast guard ships and merchant vessels".

"Italy can not accept hypocritical lessons from countries that have preferred to look the other way on immigration", the new populist government said in statement initially reported by Italian media and then confirmed by government representatives to AFP.

"Supplies will be received shortly from an Italian vessel on to Aquarius".

The rescue service says its patrol craft intercepted six different boats carrying migrants that had left from African shores throughout Saturday.

Responding to Italy's comments, Malta said it had nothing to do with the rescue operation, leaving the prospect of a diplomatic stand-off between the two European Union allies. There are also 21 patients on board who have suffered severe chemical burns after being exposed to a toxic mixture of sea water and fuel for an extended period of time. On Sunday evening, he posted an image of himself on Twitter with his arms crossed above the message, "We are closing the ports", rendered as an Italian hashtag.

Maltese Premier Joseph Muscat accused Italy of violating global norms governing sea rescues and said the government's stance risked "creating a risky situation for all those involved".
