Former Panama President Martinelli extradited from US

On Friday, President Juan Carlos Verla said the U.S. State Department had approved his request to extradite his predecessor.

Mr Martinelli is being sent to the same prison where Panama's former military leader, General Manuel Noriega, spent the last years of his life.

Panama's President Ricardo Martinelli addresses the 68th United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S. on September 25, 2013. He claims the charges are false claims from political enemies.

Judge Edwin Torres determined the extradition of Martinelli on August 31 in a 93-page ruling, because 'it satisfies all the legal requirements, ' and that verdict was later ratified by his colleague Marcia G. Cooke.

In a brief statement released Sunday night, the Panamanian Foreign Ministry said that Martinelli remains in the custody of the government of the United States, until he is delivered to Panamanian authorities. His nation's highest court, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Republic of Panama, issued a warrant for his arrest in December 2015. They did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and their court filings were not publicly available at press time. He is believed to have conducted most of the alleged illegal activity through an extensive surveillance system called the National Security Council, which carried out confidential activities at the direction of Martinelli.

Former Panamanian president Ricardo Martinelli was extradited [press release] to Panama Monday to face four charges of illegally monitoring private communications, and for embezzling over $10 million in public funds. "Because of Panama's partnership with the United States, Martinelli has been returned to Panama".
